Paul Barach: Patient Safety Initiative Announced by AMBS

July 10, 2013

Dr. Paul Barach, an academic researcher and highly experienced in the field of patient safety, assisted the American Board of Medical Specialists (ABMS) as the co-leader of its Patient Safety Improvement Program. Dr. Paul Barach earned his medical degree from the Hebrew University Hadassah Medical School, as well as a master of public health from the University’s School of Public Health and Community Medicine.

The ABMS Patient Safety Improvement Program involves four key parts related to revalidation of specialists and maintenance of certification. The first concerns the creation of a curriculum that offers strategies for remedying errors and other problems that arise in a medical setting. Another involves compiling patient safety scenarios that provide insight into relevant concerns and spur critical thought in students.

Third, the program developed quality improvement guidelines to help practitioners focus on problem areas in their practice. Finally, the project designed patient safety activities that permit physicians to practice and master methods and quality improvement concepts essential to maintaining a safe care environment.

Once the program is completed, physicians earn 20 American Medical Association Physician’s Recognition Award Category 1 Credits.
